Leanne, one of our Adelaide based Occupational Therapists, recently played a pivotal role in assisting a client achieve her goal of moving into Supported Independent Living (SIL).
Our client, Louise (alias intentionally used), had been residing in residential aged care for an extended period. After persistent efforts and a strong support network, she finally secured approval from the NDIA to transition into SIL accommodation.
This change promised Louise greater autonomy alongside a regular support team, allowing for a higher level of care as she and her caregivers could establish close relationships to address her needs.
Leanne completed initial occupational therapy assessment to determine Louise's equipment requirements, with the encounter revealing Louise as a friendly and determined individual. She was personable while facing the challenges posed by Cerebral Lupus, a condition affecting communication between her brain and body, resulting in movement difficulties.
In addition, Louise had endured a bout of COVID-19, which had interrupted her much-needed rehabilitation services. Despite these hurdles, Louise remained resolute about preserving her independence.
Following the assessment, arrangements were made for an equipment trial to test the essential equipment for Louise's safety and comfort in her new residence. Once again, her determination shone through as she actively participated in showcasing her ability to handle the equipment under Leanne's guidance.
Upon NDIA's approval of the equipment, it was promptly delivered to Louise's new home. An equipment review followed, and her Support Workers underwent manual handling training to ensure Louise's safety and comfort. Louise is now happily settling into her new home, gradually acclimating herself and getting to know her care team, content in this new phase of her life, and restored independence.
The role of an Occupational Therapist can sometimes be difficult to understand. This is just one example of how clinicians like Leanne can help create a meaningful impact for individual's while advocating for safe, independent and improved lifestyles.
