This week we celebrate the work of our OT’s as a part of National OT Week (24-30th October), with World Occupational Therapy Day on October 27th. As we celebrate, we also reflect on our passion for this often misunderstood profession.
History of OT
Holistic assessment of patients was first documented by a physician in 100 BCE, which considered people as an interaction of their health conditions and personal interests. This philosophical belief, where people interact dynamically with their environment, is considered by some the birth of occupational therapy.
Occupational Therapy can be an 'art and science'...resulting in positive health outcomes.
Contemporary occupational therapy really developed post World War 1. There were young men spending months and years in hospital beds, bored and becoming withdrawn. These soldiers were often encouraged by OTs to make toys, and craft goods for residents local to the hospitals. Research quickly evolved and showed that occupational therapy can be an ‘art and science’ where participation in meaningful activity creates engagement, resulting in positive health outcomes.
OT & NDIS
We feel that the NDIS space is a good reflection of our professional philosophy; that therapy should not just be of physical capacity, but also focussed on facilitating what a full life looks like for our clients. The future looks bright with society moving towards a Social Model of Disability, with therapists also having the capacity to focus on functional outcomes.
All Round OT
This year has been exciting for our young company, as we organise our first anniversary celebrations. Our team has grown steadily which has allowed us to find OTs with a range of skills, experience and interests, moving us closer towards being a truly 'all round' OT provider.
We hope to continue our growth as we establish our advanced clinical services in Driving, Complex Home Modifications, and supporting the profession by welcoming student placements.
